Must have been a nightmare for the ATC people with so many flights going around and so many others backing up on the ground. Narita really needs a 3rd runway but that of course would be another nightmare for the government to resume lands.....
I was awaiting take off in the line that day. Crosswinds were fluctuating throughout the afternoon. varying from 70 to 90 degrees of crosswind at typically 28 kts gusting to 45 kts. for my airline and my aircraft the max is 38 kts. of crosswind. Some less conservative airlines may Not include the gust. We do. I'd say that in the 1 1/2 hour we watched landings, 75% ended in aborted landing. Others likely wished they had. Take off was eventful but not as treacherous.

There is going to other airports if it does not land at this runway because Narita Airport does not have a runway for side winds.
